14/08/2020Prof. De Doncker and Dr. Jingxin Hu gave a lecture in the 2020 Asian PhD School on Advanced Power Electronics
On August 14th, 2020, Prof. De Doncker and Dr. Jingxin Hu were invited to give an online lecture on the topic of “Fast Charging in Urban Environments” in the 2020 Asian PhD School on Advanced Power Electronics, which is organized by Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and co-sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society. Prof. De Doncker reviewed the technological and political drivers for fast charging, and shared his views on the impacts of fast charging on the drivetrain design as well as batteries. Dr. Hu introduced the latest advances in dc-dc converters with improved efficiency, fast dynamics and short-circuit fault handling capability. The lecture has attracted more than 160 online and offline attendees worldwide from both industry and universities. From November 2-4, 2020, the 5th IEEE Workshop on the Electronic Grid (eGrid) is hosted at the Eurogress in Aachen. The IEEE eGrid 2020 offers participants from research and industry worldwide to present their latest research and project findings in the field of DC grids. The deadline for abstract submission is the 07.08.2020.

From 15 to 22 August 2019 the 2019 Asia PhD School on Advanced Power Electronics took place in Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China. Ten IEEE Fellows over the world were invited to lecture more than 300 PhD students and young engineers. On behalf of Prof. Rik. W. De Doncker, Dr. Jingxin Hu gave a lecture on "Fast Charging in the Urban Environment".

The journal article “A High Step-Up Ratio Soft-Switching DC-DC Converter for Interconnection of MVDC and HVDC Grids,” Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on, vol. 33, no. 4, pp. 2986-3001, April, 2018, co-authored by Shenghui Cui, Nils Soltau, Rik W. De Doncker, has been awarded a Second Place Prize Paper Award for 2018 in the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics.
Each year, The Editor and Associate Editors of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics recognize the three 1st prize papers and five 2nd prize papers deemed best among those published in the Transactions during the preceding calendar year. The established Transactions review criteria are used as the basis for the Prize Paper selection. Specific emphasis is placed on originality; contribution to the field; extent to which the paper is supported by analysis and experimental evidence; and quality of presentation, including the effective use of illustrations.

Ms. Warmuz presented her paper titled ‘’PV- and Battery-Ratio for very large Modular PV Parks with DC Coupled Battery Converters’’. Mr. Hu introduced his publication ’’A Partial-Power Regulated Hybrid Modular DC-DC Converter to Interconnect MVDC and LVDC Grids‘‘. Mr. Cui presented his paper ‘’AC Grid Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) of Diode-Rectifier Units based HVDC Transmission Systems‘‘. Mr. Yang introduced his research topic ’’Stability Assessment of a Three-phase Grid-tied PV Inverter with Eigenvalue based Method‘‘.

As part of an RWTH Delegation visiting the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, Prof. De Doncker was invited to give a talk on flexible electrical distribution grids and DC technologies. The seminar was organized by the Faculty of Engineering and chaired by Prof. Ying Tsui, Associated Dean, Research and International. The local IEEE Power Electronics Chapter was invited to the seminar.

The summit was opened by Mr. Hiroaki Ishizuka, Chairman of NEDO and Mr. Toshiaki Higashihara, President & CEO Hitachi, Ltd. and Chairman of the Japan Smart Community Alliance.

13/05/20193rd Workshop on Hybrid-Electric Flying
The Institute for Power Generation and Storage Systems (PGS) in cooperation with the Institute for Aerospace Systems (ILR) hosts the 3rd workshop on hybrid-electric flying. It is part of the LuFo-project “MVDC-OnBoard – Power Supply Systems for Hybrid-Electric Aircrafts” to support an intensive technical exchange between several chairs of the RWTH Aachen University and industrial companies. An optimal power supply for large hybrid-electric aircrafts is the goal of the development. Mr. Hinz (PGS) and Mr. Aigner (ILR) organized the event.

From 12 to 13 March 2019, the fourth Conference for Wind Power Drives (CWD 2019) took place at the Center for Wind Power Drives in Aachen. As part of his publication entitled "Design and Evaluation of a Battery-Supported Electric Drivetrain for Kite-Based High-Altitude Wind Energy Conversion", Daniel von den Hoff presented current research results, which were developed in cooperation with E.On and other industry partners.

On 19.11 Elad Orian from Comet-ME for sustainable rural electrification will visit us in PGS and will introduce Comet-ME and its activaties in Palestine. The presentation “Provision of basic energy services to rural communities in Palestine” will be held in Rooms 00.26/00.27 at 12:30. Comet-ME is one of the leading providers of off-grid energy and water services to rural communities that suffer from ongoing political discrimination. From September 22nd to 27th, Jingxin Hu and Zhiqing Yang visited the international conference IEEE ECCE 2018 in Portland, Oregon, USA. Mr Hu presented his paper titled ‘’Modeling and Dynamic Control of a Three-Phase Dual-Active Bridge Converter Using a Hybrid Modulation Scheme’’. Mr. Yang presented his publication ‘’Operation-Oriented Design Procedure of a Three-Phase Dual-Active Bridge for a Wide Operation Range’’. Additionally, Mr. Hu and Mr. Yang participated in the IEEE workshop ’’Design Automation for Power Electronics – DAPE’’.
